ronan + erwan bouroullec = keeping it in the family!

it’s time to focus our attention on the fantastic, award-winning design of the Bouroullec brothers, Ronan & Erwan. currently based in paris, the pair have been hard at work for over ten years, while building a reputation as rising stars in the european design community. during their years in the industry, they’ve designed anything from chairs for vitra, sofas for kartell, kitchenware for alessi, or even a boutique for issey miyake.

their work has resulted in several different awards, including the grand prix du design in 1998 and designers of the year at salon du meuble in 2002. they’ve also been featured in exhibitions around the world; most notably, the pair were showcased at the design museum, london in 2002. another highlight of their successful career has been the phaidon, self-titled monograph showcasing a wide range of their creative output, which you can buy from amazon, here.

one of our favorite highlights by the boroullec’s is the custom-fitted apartment in the unité d’habitation project in marseille built by le corbusier. not intended as a museum, but instead as a lived-in space open to visitors during summer 2010, the apartment featured “a selection of objects from our collection of designs which seemed to rightly fit in this apartment and match the way the owners are living in it”. read more about the project here.

having surfaced early in 2011, their latest project sees the brothers working with spanish rug designer nanimarquina. inspired by traditional persian rug designs, the losanges rug collection was hand-crafted in northern pakistan using afghan wool. with the application of a traditional manufacturing process, each rug can be considered a unique piece. we certainly look forward to what ronan and erwan will offer in the future!

cody hudson = struggl(inc.) for art!

cody hudson is a chicago based, all-purpose artist with a passion for clean, multi-dimensional graphics. he takes influence from old-school graphic designers, such as paul rand, bruno munari, and josef muller-brockmann. his work has been exhibited around the globe in several important outlets, such as the museum of contemporary art in chicago, rocket gallery in tokyo, or the lazy dog in paris. he has also worked with different clothing brands like stussy, nike, or sixpack france.

cody’s main endeavor takes the form of struggle inc., a commercial art house which takes cue from urban modernism and organic visual deconstruction. whatever that means, we are absolutely in love with his work. not only is cody entrenched with commercial projects, but he’s also open for public works, such as a permanent installation at the white sox/35th CTA station as part of the arts in transit program, which was commissioned by the city of chicago.

another facet of cody’s work takes form in his wood-based installations. he mostly uses different pieces of scrap wood, which he claims to find in a close-by dumpster in the neighborhood where he keeps his studio. we also dig his album cover pieces, particularly the one he did for the berg sans nipple, seen below.

it’s hard to find an artist who does one thing well, but cody seems to have no problem working with so many different clients and mediums. perhaps this is simply a way for him to remain interested in what he does; either way the man can do no wrong at the moment, and we can’t wait to see what he’s got up his sleeve next!

us + dels = a fruitful relationship!

Us is a multi-disciplinary design studio based out of london, consisting of Christopher Barrett & Luke Taylor. although their work covers a lot of different areas, brand identity and development, printed literature, art direction, advertising, motion, installations & web; it was their promo videos for big dada/ninja tune artist DELS, that drew our attention to their work. while they are conceptually different, both videos are equally stunning. in addition, the studio has also created an equally impressive branding and identity, for which the came up with a unique typeface and animated logo.

the first video, for the single “shapeshifting”, takes place in a surreal world where the artist appears in different costumes and characters, but while the concept is quite simple the result is absolutely brilliant.

the second, and most recent video is for the single “trumpalump” and takes cue from one of the track’s lyrics: “do we dream in colour or black and white”. the entire video was finished without any post production, everything was achieved on camera.
