colectivo digs four tet!

Kieran Hebden aka Four Tet (twitter @fourtet) has been a known force in the electronic music scenes for the past ten years or so. throughout that span he has released five solo albums, a DJ-kicks compilation, and four collaborative albums with jazz legend Steve Reid. last year’s “there is love in you“, his latest full-lenght, was an exercise in unabashed melodic goodness fused with modern dancefloor aesthetics. in fact, it was Kieran’s most dancefloor-orientated album to date, and honestly one of his most accomplished efforts to our ears.

Kieran also runs his own label text records (discogs). there he’s released records by some of his closest musical allies, such as koushik, caribou, rocketnumbernine, and his own band fridge. the label has been picking up momentum in recent times due to high profile collaborations with burial and thom yorke, as well as some of four tet‘s own dancefloor burners. the latest of which (text11) you can listen to below

recently, we’ve also come to discover Kieran’s DJing abilities. his sets fuse a host of styles seamlessly; be it techno, experimental, bass, or world musics, his programming is always top notch. his upcoming mix cd for the fabriclive series, out september 19th, is one of our most expected releases of the year. putting together tracks by burial, ricardo villalobos, caribou, as well as some of his own unreleased productions, the mix Kieran says “is not about my DJing. It’s about London and fabric and nights out and my take on all that. The memories and the influences. I used old and new music, I used recordings of fabric, and I made new tracks of my own for it. I hope people play it fucking loud and lose their minds in it and remember or imagine what it’s all about”. read more info and pre-order fabriclive 59 here.

colectivo digs vakula!

this colectivo digs section is dedicated to the amazing house orientated music of an unusual suspect, hailing from an unexpected city in ukraine. mikhaylo vityk, known musically as Vakula, does not come from a town where house music is embedded in its culture, such as detroit or chicago; instead he is from an industrial city in northern ukraine called konotop. having only started producing in 2002, his output today can only be described as absolutely brilliant. from his first release on UK based label uzuri, you could tell his attention to details and ever present groove would give lots to talk about in the future.

further releases on deep house stalwarts such as quintessentials, firecracker recordings, and best works, served to cement Vakula‘s place among the best references of modern house music producers that not only hint at the past respectfully, but also look forward with originality and aplomb.

2011 has so far been a prolific year for the ukranian producer, with an abstract offering for canadian label archipel, a jazzy affair on 3rd strike records, a massive rehash of steve reich on white label (which you can hear below), and a forthcoming deeper-than-deep 10″ on firecracker’s new offshoot unthank. it’s safe to say that we at colectivo futuro are massively expectant of what the future will provide via the talented hands of mr. Vakula!

colectivo digs twin shadow!

this time around we’d like to feature the fantastic music of dominican-born George Lewis Jr. aka Twin Shadow. now a resident of brooklyn, new york, Lewis released his debut album, “Forget”, last year to much critical acclaim. adapting a simple approach to revisit the new-wave sound of 1980′s britain, Twin Shadow has surely become one of the top purveyors of an often maligned vintage sound.

the album, which by the way was produced by chris taylor of grizzly bear fame, was picked up by highly influential, london based label 4AD. its overall sound aesthetic hints at classic artists such as morrisey, david bowie, or echo and the bunnymen; while at the same time delivering a fresh and forward-looking end product. a couple of standouts are singles “slow” and “castles in the snow”, both of which carry a heavy nostalgic and catchy feel, much like the rest of the tracks on the album.

make sure to keep an eye out for any live dates in a city near you, as the band is currently entrenched in a long tour around europe, followed by some dates in the US. in the meantime, check out this 14-minute live session for 4AD, recorded towards the end of last year at teddington studios. it features most of the album’s main cuts, and gives a proper insight of the band’s current live setup and style.
