ukiyo-e = floating japanese art!

western cultures are usually obsessed with japanese things, particularly food, cars, and technological gadgets. however, japanese art forms are in most cases overlooked or flat out ignored, except perhaps for origami, which became popular a few years ago. we recently came across a technique that became widely used in the 17th and 18th centuries, called moku hanga, which translates to woodblock printing. this technique had various sub-genres, the most famous of which was the ukiyo-e, or pictures of the floating world.

mostly, artists which engaged in the technique are very difficult to track, particularly because most of them adopted pseudonyms according to the school they belonged to; and in some cases apprentices would acquire the pseudonym of their masters once these had passed away. this approach, gives the impression that artists were more interested in spreading their art organically, without the need for big sums of money or fame. however, there are a few woodblock painters who became more renowned and thus highly profitable, such is the case of hiroshige and kunisada.

smallville records = a cover story!

smallville records is a label & record shop based in hamburg, germany. their current catalogue extends to 21 EPs and 3 albums, all centered around deep, detroit-nodding house and techno. their artist of choice for all artwork related endeavors is stefan marx, a multitalented, graphic artist hailing from germany.

stefan’s signature style might be hard to pinpoint, as he varies between colorful, painting-like drawings and minimal, black and white sketches. nevertheless, by choosing to stick to a single graphic artist with a distinct personality, the label is able to carry a unified aesthetic across the board, whether it’s in their record art, posters, clothing, etc.

os gêmeos = brothers in arts!

os gêmeos are a pair of twin brothers stemming from são paulo, brazil. otavio & gustavo pandolfo’s specialty is conveying their dreams into wonderful street art pieces that can be found in many cities and galleries across the globe. their singular and recognizable style has been influenced by both traditional hip-hop culture and the brazilian pixaçao movement, which was born in their native city. their main focus, like many other street artists, lies in political and social issues, which they illustrate via simple scenes of daily life and recurring yellow-skinned characters, which often appear in the twins’ dreams.

lately, os gêmeos have been busy not only painting walls across numerous cities (they recently painted a huge wall in lisbon in collaboration with blu), but they have also seen a gradual move towards the gallery and museum setting, with exhibitions at art basel miami, tate modern in london, and deitch gallery in new york. their range of works has also expanded to include painting on canvases, sculptures, various objects, and installations. if there is something that strikes us when looking at their pieces, is their absolute attention to detail and unique vibrant colors, which makes them part of our favorite street artists.

to keep track of their latest doings, you can follow os gêmeos via twitter: @OsGemeos or you can add their blog to your rss reader. in the meantime, and to get a better overview of their work and inspiration, check out this interview during their too far too close exhibition at deitch projects gallery in new york back in 2008…
