elliott burford is still a colectivo futurist!

last year in may, we wrote about the wonderful world of elliott burford. back then he was working at the fabrica research center in treviso, italy; an applied creativity laboratory set up by benetton back in 1994. after finishing his two-year artist residence there, he moved back to his home country, australia. if only temporarily there, elliott has found time to keep working on several projects, including a 220 piece drawing collection for belgian gallery grand hornu, a glass and wood piece for secondome, and preparing for a workshop he’ll be giving at boisbuchet in france this coming summer.

one of his latest projects at fabrica, and one of our favorite ones as well, was the branding campaign for down side up, a collection of modular wooden furniture. the project was exhibited in milan, venice, and new york.

check some of his latest projects below; details of which you can find in his updated website.

ronan + erwan bouroullec = keeping it in the family!

it’s time to focus our attention on the fantastic, award-winning design of the Bouroullec brothers, Ronan & Erwan. currently based in paris, the pair have been hard at work for over ten years, while building a reputation as rising stars in the european design community. during their years in the industry, they’ve designed anything from chairs for vitra, sofas for kartell, kitchenware for alessi, or even a boutique for issey miyake.

their work has resulted in several different awards, including the grand prix du design in 1998 and designers of the year at salon du meuble in 2002. they’ve also been featured in exhibitions around the world; most notably, the pair were showcased at the design museum, london in 2002. another highlight of their successful career has been the phaidon, self-titled monograph showcasing a wide range of their creative output, which you can buy from amazon, here.

one of our favorite highlights by the boroullec’s is the custom-fitted apartment in the unité d’habitation project in marseille built by le corbusier. not intended as a museum, but instead as a lived-in space open to visitors during summer 2010, the apartment featured “a selection of objects from our collection of designs which seemed to rightly fit in this apartment and match the way the owners are living in it”. read more about the project here.

having surfaced early in 2011, their latest project sees the brothers working with spanish rug designer nanimarquina. inspired by traditional persian rug designs, the losanges rug collection was hand-crafted in northern pakistan using afghan wool. with the application of a traditional manufacturing process, each rug can be considered a unique piece. we certainly look forward to what ronan and erwan will offer in the future!

kibisi = the perfect (design) symbiosis!

KiBiSi is a symbiotic design studio founded by industrial designer Lars Holme Larsen, architect Bjarke Ingels, and branding specialist Jens Martin Skibsted. the trio, based out of Copenhagen, attempts to fuse design, architecture and ideation to spawn a new breed of idea driven design. recently, the studio has become popular around the blogosphere thanks to its collaboration with Puma and Biomega on the creation of the mopion: a fashionable cargo bike that accommodates true urban lifestyle.

also on the news recently, is the tma-1 headphone design, which was created exclusively for danish electronics brand aiaiai. the final result is a careful and austere design that provides the user with maximum functionality and great technical performance. check out Lars & Jens talking about the product on the video below…
