BALDO (Neovinyl, Barcelona)

neovinyl | resident advisor | twitter: @neovinyl

* how and where was this mix recorded?

It was recorded at home using ableton live, since I currently don’t have any DJ equipment. It took me a few afternoons to complete between selecting the tracks & the actual mixing.

* having grown up in a small town in the south of spain, we are curious to know: what turned you towards music and DJing?

There’s something that most people don’t know about southern Spain… in the late 90s there was a surprisingly big breakbeat music scene… there were a lot of clubs in smaller towns and it suddenly became popular amongst my friends to DJ (it was either that or doing sports!). So they started buying vinyl and DJing in their homes, making parties for friends. On top of that I was always interested music and technology, so I started buying records as well, and began to introduce myself in the electronic music scene. Gradually, I started learning about making music, releasing on labels, etc…

* how was neovinyl born? you started off with a netlabel and have now transitioned to a digital label, how would you compare both experiences?

The idea grew out of creating a platform where people could listen to our own productions for free (Neovinyl is owned both by Baldo & best friend Carlo). If people were to download our first productions today, they would certainly feel the evolution we’ve experienced, that to us is something really beautiful. When we first started, the netlabel explosion hadn’t begun and we really had little idea of what we were supposed to be doing.

We can’t really say we’ve dropped the netlabel side of things altogether, we are simply running parallel projects with the netlabel (free) and the digital label. We are slowly releasing music on the netlabel for more experimental and personal projects these days, because there’s bigger room for risk taking. With the digital label, we’ve taken a step forward towards making our music known to a different crowd. All in all, both projects have provided us with amazing experiences and they’ve helped us mature as artists and introduced us to different people and artists.

* what do you normally listen to at home? which are your top three favorite albums ever?

I listen to a lot of different things. In fact very little of it is electronic. Lately I’ve been listening to Caribou, Grizzly Bear, Lindstrom & Toro y Moi. As far as favorite albums, it would take me forever to make a final decision, but there is one that comes to mind, which is Adore by Smashing Pumpkins.

If you’re on spotify you can check out two playlists that I like to keep current with new and old favorites:

* what is your favorite thing about barcelona?

The weather, friends who live here, regularly good club lineups & parties that last all night long!

* what can we expect from yourself and neovinyl in 2010?

I’ve just released a track (the perfumed kiss) on Microfreak with a remix by Daniel Kyo. Also in June, there will be two new remixes by myself coming out on Clock and on Redmo. This summer I’ll take a break from production under my own name and will focus on a new project called Plus One, which is formed by Miguel Colmenares and myself. We will finish some remixes and original tracks for release after summer.

Regarding Neovinyl, June 17th sees the release of an EP by Maik Yells with remixes by Tom Ellis and Carlo. Afterwards comes an EP by V.Rotz with remixes by Rene Breitbarth and Oren Bi. Then we have a series of release planned with artists who’ve already release with us like Echonomist, Miguel Colmenares, Ham N’ Cheese and Loops, as well as some new artists, such as Denite, Pete Lazonby and Hain Dutt. We are trying our best to keep our workflow steady!

* how and where was this mix recorded?

The mix was done at home using Traktor while having a glass of fine spanish Rioja wine.

* having traveled recently to chile, what would you say are the most notable differences and similarities between the electronic music culture there and in germany?

I can only tell you about my personal view that comes from an impression of a 3 week trip. I think people in Chile are more open minded and curious when it comes to electronic music because they are not overloaded with it like people have been in Germany. It’s a small but very active scene and much more community-like. Also, the netaudio movement, with Labels like Pueblo Nuevo, Epasonidos and Impar, has done a great job for the whole culture there.  Netaudio and digital music is very important there because there are no record shops and it’s difficult and expensive to buy records from overseas.

In germany we have one of the biggest market for electronic music where the whole thing is more commercial and business orientated. Many labels, artists, releases and promoters stay under pressure to be successful because of money. This is not very conducive for new concepts and ideas. Regardless, I really like what the people in Berlin have arranged with the netaudio festival; it’s a step in the right direction with a strong cultural adjustment.

* how different would you say it is to run a net-label (tropic) as opposed to a digital label (homemade)?

As I decided to make a digital label, the whole business thing was new to me, so I learned a lot of new stuff – how to  promote music and work in a more professional way as i did before with Tropic, because you need to act under pressure when investing money in something. I was very sceptic about a digital label – there are so many out there! but I think that quality will always survive in the jungle of digital labels

With Tropic things are more relaxed and more open to different kinds of electronic music. It has been my baby for all the music I like to put out without needing to adjust to anyone else’s taste. It’s also a good chance for artists to reach a lot of people from all over the world. There are Tropic releases with 20.000 downloads – you’d never reach this huge amount of downloads with a physical or a digital (non-free) release.

* what do you normally listen to at home? which are your top three favorite albums ever?

I listen to a wide range of music at home. I love all the old stuff from the Red Hot Chili Peppers, older East Coast Hip Hop, some Punk and early nineties Rock, and some german music from artists like Gentleman, Clueso and Bosse.

wow… top three albums – hard decision as there are some many goodies out there. So I’ll pick the most influential ones for me:

Nirvana – Nevermind
E-Dancer – Heavenly
Maurizio – M-Series

* what is your favorite thing about frankfurt?

Beside the skyline and the good sausages?! I like its multicultural mixture, the different faces of the city – fast and busy as it’s the financial center of europe and on the other hand the laid back areas like Bornheim and Sachsenhausen with lots of bars, little stores and markets. It has a good club scene with one of the best clubs in the world – Robert Johnson (it’s in Offenbach – but real close to Frankfurt) where I’ve had the chance to listen to a lot of good music there.

* what can we expect from d.soul and the labels you curate in 2010?

I’m working hard on my own release for Homemade, which will be released under my Elate moniker in summer if everything goes fine, as well as a new EP for Tropic with more quiet, melodic & experimental stuff. I also started a project with my chilean friend Hans Carstens and we are excited about the upcoming results. There will be a release on Homemade from Kitkaliittoo out of finland with a remix from Juno 6 coming up in May. On Tropic we will drop a compliation with guys from Chile and a new release of Markus Masuhr is still in the line. busy times, man!

MOREON aka GUSTAVO ROMANO (Inverzo Records, Venezuela)

* how and where was this mix recorded?

It was recorded at my home, in my room with full AC (103 Farenheit outside), 2 Technics MK1210 + 1 simple 2 channel mixer + Serato Scratch

* how did you start djing? where would you say you got your first influences from?

I started working in the production of a local electronic radio show in 2000, which was ran by some friends on Barquisimeto’s La Mega 103.3. The show was and still is called DJ Time. My first influences were the “early” rave scene of Venezuela, Jeff Mills and Plastikman to name a few artists & the decadence of rock and “alternative rock” music in the late 90′s

* what is the state of the electronic music scene in venezuela, what do you think is missing from it? where do you see it going in the future?

The main problem lies in the political, social & economic crisis in general, particularly caused by the “Nu style” dictatorship of you know who (Mr. Chavez). With regards to the dance scene… there are too many new talents that remain unknown because there are no clubs, promoters or places to make the scene grow. As long as the political system remains intact, the scene will continue to deteriorate. Thankfully though, as a result of the internet, there will always be producers and DJs with a will to create something new and innovative. A current example is a 15 year old DJ called LM aka Leonardo Machado who has already been featured on the Soul Clap podcast.

* what do you normally listen to at home? which are your top three favorite albums ever?

Ever… ummm, not easy… from my childhood to this day, these come to mind…

- Michael Jackson – Bad

- Beck – Mellow Gold

- Ricardo Villalobos – Thé Au Harem d’Archimède

* what can we expect from yourself and from inverzo records in 2010?

Holt m07h38 0f c8r1s7… Inverzo is becoming really difficult to handle at this time & where I’m living, but towards the end of the year I’m moving to Europe, specifically to Barcelona. Hopefully things get better there… But I have to say that we have some really nice tracks to release really soon… an amazingly groovy remix of “Trasero Religioso” by Miguel Colmenares, and pair of nice tracks from Ivan Chuckfish & Don Nadie.
