dub echoes = dubcumentary!

durante los últimos meses el colectivo se ha interesado bastante por la música dub y sus técnicas de grabación. existen varias teorias que dicen que la gran mayoría de la música que escuchamos hoy día ha sido influenciada por este fenómeno iniciado en jamaica en los años 60s. el dub, en resumen, consiste en remezclar y manipular temas en versiones instrumentales, basandosé en el uso de efectos y haciendo enfasis en la base rítmica. la creación del dub es acreditada a king tubby y lee “scratch” perry, quienes comenzaron a usar su “mixing boards” como si fueran un instrumento.

luego de investigar un poco, encontramos un interesante documental que busca aclarar como las técnicas del dub siguen influenciando la música de hoy en día. el film, dirigido y filmado por bruno natal, es una colección de entrevistas con viejos y nuevos artistas que forman parte clave del género; entre ellos: sly & robbie, scientist, roots manuva, mad professor y el mismisimo lee “scratch” perry.

during the past few months, we’ve sparked a lot of interest towards dub music and its recording techniques. there are various theories that indicate that this musical phenomenon, which began in jamaica in the 60s, has heavily influenced the way today’s music is made. dub, in short, consists in remixing and manipulating original tracks into instrumental versions, with a strong focus in the use of effects and the rhythm section. the creation of dub is credited to king tubby & lee “scratch” perry, who began using their mixing boards as if they were an instrument.

after doing some research, we found a interesting documentary that looks to explain how dub techniques have a big influence in the music we hear today. the film, directed and filmed by bruno natal, is a collection of interviews with both new and old artists who play a key roll in the genre, such as: sly & robbie, scientist, roots manuva, mad professor, and the one and only lee “scratch” perry.
