folk clothing = intricate simplicity!

we recently came across a fantastic clothing brand while shopping at sportivo in madrid (the store alone warrants a post by itself). folk clothing is a london based casual menswear brand born in 2001; they also started making shoes for both men and women in 2004. their mission statement: “making clean, honest understated garments with a meticulous eye for colour, fabric selection and design detail. we create simple everday clothing with subtle, innovative and sometimes playful detailing”. something they definitely achieve with high marks.

not only are their clothes unique, but so is their production process: they make alpaca knits in peru, shirts in portugal, jackets in hong kong, accessories in england, and merino knitwear in uruguay. in this day and age where everything is outsourced to a place with cheap labour, it’s encouraging to come across a brand that is worried with finding the best possible supplier for each product. we’ll take quality over quantity any day of the week!

there are currently only four folk stores, three in london and one in amsterdam, but there are plenty of places that carry their clothes. click for a full list of stockists. check out their website and follow them on twitter @folkclothing for further details. also, make sure to check out the video below, previewing their autumn/winter 2010 collection.

us + dels = a fruitful relationship!

Us is a multi-disciplinary design studio based out of london, consisting of Christopher Barrett & Luke Taylor. although their work covers a lot of different areas, brand identity and development, printed literature, art direction, advertising, motion, installations & web; it was their promo videos for big dada/ninja tune artist DELS, that drew our attention to their work. while they are conceptually different, both videos are equally stunning. in addition, the studio has also created an equally impressive branding and identity, for which the came up with a unique typeface and animated logo.

the first video, for the single “shapeshifting”, takes place in a surreal world where the artist appears in different costumes and characters, but while the concept is quite simple the result is absolutely brilliant.

the second, and most recent video is for the single “trumpalump” and takes cue from one of the track’s lyrics: “do we dream in colour or black and white”. the entire video was finished without any post production, everything was achieved on camera.

peepshow collective = a glimpse into outstanding illustration!

london-based peepshow collective is a “multi-disciplinary collective focusing on illustration, animation, and art direction”. founded in 2000 by 10 budding artists who graduated from the university of brighton with a BA in illustration, the agency has built an enviable list of clients, including: the bbc, creative review, the financial times, the new york times, puma, among many others. what we love about their work is that despite being formed by ten different artists, their overall aesthetic manages to stay uniform, while still maintaining a high level of diversity in their finished pieces.

not only does peepshow excel in creating stunning illustrations and animations for their clients, but they also get involved with the artist community by taking part in special workshops and gallery projects, such as their latest appearance at “pick me up” at the somerset house in london.

below you’ll be able to see our favorite works from the collective, ranging from editorial work to posters and prints, as well as animations. if you like what you see, don’t forget to check out their website as well as their blog, which stays very up to date with their most current projects.
