had AfroCubism been realized when it was originally intended, we would have probably never heard of what then became Buena Vista Social Club. as the story goes, in 1996, a group of mali’s finest musicians were due to fly into havana to record some sessions organized by producer Nick Gold. for still unclear reasons, the malians never arrived. fast forward to 2010, and Gold finally assembled the original invitees along with added talent into a studio in madrid for four days, resulting in a live, unrehearsed masterpiece of afro-cuban music.
the band is composed by a who’s who of world music greats. fronting the cuban side is singer/guitarist Eliades Ochoa, a founding member of buena vista social club. joining him is the also famous Grupo Patria, a much revered band in the cuban music circuit, providing double bass, percussion, trumpets, and backing vocals. the african side is fronted by one of the continent’s biggest stars, kora master and character to boot Toumani Diabaté. alongside him are fellow countrymen Bassekou Kouyate on ngoni and Djelimady Tounkara on electric guitar. rounding out the superband are Kasse Mady Diabaté on vocals, Lassana Diabaté on balafon, and Baba Sissoko on talking drum.
although the album is truly a wonderful piece of music, it is in the live circuit that they excel. we had the opportunity to catch them during their concert in madrid, and were amazed at how so many different instruments and personalities gelled together seamlessly to fill the room with a sea of coherent sounds. we fully recommend keeping an eye for for any live gigs in a city near you!
keep track of the band via their website or thru their nonesuch records profile. also, check the player below for samples from their self-titled album, definitely one of our favorites for 2010…
