hyperdub = a cover story!

UK bass label hyperdub has quickly become one of the most revered labels in the planet via their consistent take on future bass musics from the likes of burial, kode9 & the spaceape, zomby, king midas sound, and many more. what initially began as a 100% music focus, with simple vinyl artwork featuring the label’s logo and record info, has shifted to a more complete package with the futuristic graphics provided by london based studio optigram.

somewhat mysterious and elusive, optigram is a sister company of electrofunk label citinite, and has done artwork for several labels and brands including Clients include Hyperdub, Warp, Planet Mu, Hum + Buzz, Sähkö, Public Information, The Wire, XLR8R, MIT Press and the Red Bull Music Academy.

often recurring to geometric and repetitive patterns, their artworks are a perfect companion for hyperdub’s often mold-braking releases that hover between future garage, grime, house, and techno. however, they are equally effective when stepping out of their comfort zone as is the case on the beautiful and much more organic kode9 + the spaceape album cover (picture above), which is reminiscent of early japanese print art.

colectivo digs four tet!

Kieran Hebden aka Four Tet (twitter @fourtet) has been a known force in the electronic music scenes for the past ten years or so. throughout that span he has released five solo albums, a DJ-kicks compilation, and four collaborative albums with jazz legend Steve Reid. last year’s “there is love in you“, his latest full-lenght, was an exercise in unabashed melodic goodness fused with modern dancefloor aesthetics. in fact, it was Kieran’s most dancefloor-orientated album to date, and honestly one of his most accomplished efforts to our ears.

Kieran also runs his own label text records (discogs). there he’s released records by some of his closest musical allies, such as koushik, caribou, rocketnumbernine, and his own band fridge. the label has been picking up momentum in recent times due to high profile collaborations with burial and thom yorke, as well as some of four tet‘s own dancefloor burners. the latest of which (text11) you can listen to below

recently, we’ve also come to discover Kieran’s DJing abilities. his sets fuse a host of styles seamlessly; be it techno, experimental, bass, or world musics, his programming is always top notch. his upcoming mix cd for the fabriclive series, out september 19th, is one of our most expected releases of the year. putting together tracks by burial, ricardo villalobos, caribou, as well as some of his own unreleased productions, the mix Kieran says “is not about my DJing. It’s about London and fabric and nights out and my take on all that. The memories and the influences. I used old and new music, I used recordings of fabric, and I made new tracks of my own for it. I hope people play it fucking loud and lose their minds in it and remember or imagine what it’s all about”. read more info and pre-order fabriclive 59 here.

colectivo digs vakula!

this colectivo digs section is dedicated to the amazing house orientated music of an unusual suspect, hailing from an unexpected city in ukraine. mikhaylo vityk, known musically as Vakula, does not come from a town where house music is embedded in its culture, such as detroit or chicago; instead he is from an industrial city in northern ukraine called konotop. having only started producing in 2002, his output today can only be described as absolutely brilliant. from his first release on UK based label uzuri, you could tell his attention to details and ever present groove would give lots to talk about in the future.

further releases on deep house stalwarts such as quintessentials, firecracker recordings, and best works, served to cement Vakula‘s place among the best references of modern house music producers that not only hint at the past respectfully, but also look forward with originality and aplomb.

2011 has so far been a prolific year for the ukranian producer, with an abstract offering for canadian label archipel, a jazzy affair on 3rd strike records, a massive rehash of steve reich on white label (which you can hear below), and a forthcoming deeper-than-deep 10″ on firecracker’s new offshoot unthank. it’s safe to say that we at colectivo futuro are massively expectant of what the future will provide via the talented hands of mr. Vakula!
