it’s time to focus our attention on the fantastic, award-winning design of the Bouroullec brothers, Ronan & Erwan. currently based in paris, the pair have been hard at work for over ten years, while building a reputation as rising stars in the european design community. during their years in the industry, they’ve designed anything from chairs for vitra, sofas for kartell, kitchenware for alessi, or even a boutique for issey miyake.

their work has resulted in several different awards, including the grand prix du design in 1998 and designers of the year at salon du meuble in 2002. they’ve also been featured in exhibitions around the world; most notably, the pair were showcased at the design museum, london in 2002. another highlight of their successful career has been the phaidon, self-titled monograph showcasing a wide range of their creative output, which you can buy from amazon, here.

one of our favorite highlights by the boroullec’s is the custom-fitted apartment in the unité d’habitation project in marseille built by le corbusier. not intended as a museum, but instead as a lived-in space open to visitors during summer 2010, the apartment featured “a selection of objects from our collection of designs which seemed to rightly fit in this apartment and match the way the owners are living in it”. read more about the project here.

having surfaced early in 2011, their latest project sees the brothers working with spanish rug designer nanimarquina. inspired by traditional persian rug designs, the losanges rug collection was hand-crafted in northern pakistan using afghan wool. with the application of a traditional manufacturing process, each rug can be considered a unique piece. we certainly look forward to what ronan and erwan will offer in the future!
