hector mediavilla = a sapeur connaisseur!

Hector Mediavilla is a business graduate turned documentary photographer from spain. this sudden change of career has prompted Hector to travel across the globe in search of new photographic encounters. one of his most famous series is his study on congolese “sapeurs“. coming from the acronym SAPE, which reads “societé des ambienceurs et des persones élégantes”, sapeurs are a social group concerned with elegance, good manners, politeness, and morality.

the first ever sapeur emerged in 1922, when G.A. Matsoua, a congolese citizen, travelled to Paris and returned looking like a bona fide french gentleman causing the admiration of his fellow congo-men. nowadays, sapeurs can be found among the streets of brazzaville wearing suits worth thousands of dollars, while surrounded by extreme levels of poverty and misery. according to Hector “this is simply a particular way to leave a footprint in a remote corner of the world”.

yosigo = retro specialist!

yosigo is the pseudonym of jose javier serrano, a very talented basque-spanish photographer from donostia, also known as san sebastián. his specialty is taking daily scenes and turning them into something mystical and cinematic. whether it’s thru his architectural, found-objects, or people related shots; yosigo’s singular retro style emanates throughout.

to date, one of his most noted collaborations has been with burgeoning fashion label loreak mendian, for which yosigo contributed his talents for the fall/winter 2009 collection catalogue. the result of which can be seen below…

noah kalina = a photographer west (of here)!

we don’t actually know much about brooklyn based photographer noah kalina, but we do know that his shots are highly conceptual and absolutely fantastic! in general, noah’s work is a tad dark and shadowy, spread across different projects featuring both portraits and landscapes, his shots constantly evoke the otherworldly.

recently, noah launched kalina magazine; each single-themed issue creatively features his own photography projects as well as the work of select guest artists. if you ask us, we’d grab every issue in a heartbeat!
